Who Am I?
Hi! I’m Jodi. I started this podcast in 2016 because I had some questions about what it takes to run a healthy, successful family. I love to read parenting and business books, and I was getting some answers, but I still have more questions than answers. I decided that I would start asking people directly: how do you have a successful family? how do you all look so put-together? how do you manage a home and a family, like work-life balance? how have your children grown to be so successful, what did you do? How have you developed a family mission statement? These questions and more are what fuel my research and my discussions with people how seem to know the answers. In my podcast, I hope to uncover our families’ collective vision, values, traditions, habits, communication, and goals that give families greater unity and success!
I am just an average homeschooling mom living in Virginia. I am a recovering perfectionist, purveyor of references to self-improvement books, and I love to sing. I am active in my church, and currently serve as the president of the children’s organization in my congregation. I volunteer for my local homeschool convention. I like to say that I am also in pursuit of fitness, freedom, and family joy.
What to Expect from this Podcast
I started this podcast because I am passionate about my family! I first started noticing this idea of family culture when I met a couple with two very different backgrounds who weren’t getting along very well. When I asked someone in a similar situation who were thriving in their marriage what they do, he said they agreed on letting go of their backgrounds and adopting the same family culture that would make their family successful. This has really gotten me thinking. My husband and I come from very similar situations and share the same values and beliefs, but even we needed to learn how to agree on what our unique family culture would be like. Then, I was watching the Olympics, and seeing videos of young prodigies succeeding at life, and I started to think that someone in their family figured out what they valued and made it a part of their family culture. How, though?
Well, that is my mission with this podcast! I interview experts who offer tips and tools that help families discover and design what their vision, values, beliefs, and traditions are that shape our family culture. I also interview successful individuals who were influenced by their family culture to discover what was going on in their home that inspired their greatness. I want to share what I learn with you, and equip you with the tools that will help you create the family culture you envision for your family.
I have interviewed Nicholeen Peck of Teaching Self-Government, Marlene Peterson of The Well-Educated Heart, Rachel DeMille of A Thomas Jefferson Education, Brad Wilcox – professor at Brigham Young University, Paul Schulte – an Olympic wheelchair basketball player, and Emma Briggs of Yo Gabba Gabba to name a few. Come check out my site at homeandfamilyculture.com and see where I go in this journey of discovering how family culture works, and how I’m applying what I learn to my own family!
